By longennamer ·
I have a workstation that continuously reboots. It just finishes loading windows, and then it says win98 is shutting down, and it proceeds to reboot again. what are some possible causes?

It could be heat-related. Make sure you have a cooling fan or heatsink connected to the processor, then make sure the fan is blowing
on the power supply.

Leave the case off for awhile and turn off the computer. Then turn it on and see if itboots ok. If it does, you'll know for sure it's heat-related.

It boots into safe mode just fine, so I'm pretty sure it isn't heat related

Do you have a boot disk for this computer? If not, then create a boot disk and reinstall the OS on top of your current install. This should overwrite any missing files.

If the problem still occurs, then I suggest fdisking the drive and starting over.

Also, you might want to look at the hardware you have installed on this computer. If it boots to safe mode, then one or more of the additional stuff you installed (programs/drivers that windows does not need to operate) is creating a conflict or problem.

I ran into that same problem with one of my clients. It required a BIOS update from the motherboard manufacurer which corrected that problem but introduced another by not allowing me to logon to an NT4 server.

Run scandisk for any drive errors
Check the system for viruses
check the anti-virus software configuration,to insure that it is not scanning files at startup
the other thing to check is power management configuration
