Win98 Freezes every 24 hours

By rawright ·
I have a Win98 PC that freezes every night at about 12:15 - no mouse or keyboard response. I've shut down System Agent and all antivirus programs. I've also removed all programs from the Startup folder, but the problem still occurs. What else is Win98 doing in the wee hours of the morning that could cause such symptoms?

You've probably got it set up to do auto-maintenance tasks like scandisk and defrag. Go to Accessories, System Utilities, System Maintenance and reconfigure it.

Number one has a good answer. Also.. you should check to make sure that there arn't any scheduled AT jobs running? Open a command prompt and type "at".

Okay I have to say this... and I hate saying this because I hate it when people answer my question with a statment that I didn't ask about.. but... Windows 98 wasn't exactly meant to be kept running all day every day I wouldn't suggests that you do so.. weird things happen.. the cache isn't cleard or something is stored in virual memory that shouldn't be.. etc..
Ok I said it... sorry.

If you are connected to a network - which I'm assuming you are since you posted this in the NT forum and not in the Win9x forum, there may be something that is running on the network that is causing this. It could be, for example, that a backup is running on the network and trying to back up files from the workstation. Or maybe the network backup is shutting down some process or un-sharing a shared folder during the backup that causes the workstation to freeze up. My advice - just shut the thing down overnight. (I know this probably isn't what you really want to hear, but it's the most reliable solution!) Hope this helps.

If you have Norton Antivirus on that machine, check the definition date. There was a set of definitions in late June that caused this exact problem. We had two machines where the problem was resolved when we updated definitions to 7/1.

rlardinois hit the nail on the head. This PC still has trouble, but background tasks were not involved. There a new issues, but the Norton update solved this one. Thanks for the assist...
