Win98 freezes on network access

By derek_grunewald ·
I have a relatively new network that supports about 20-25 people. I'm using cat5 cabling and running an NT4 file and print server. I also have a WAN between 2 other offices using a PPP T1 connection. Occasionally, when users access the local server through Windows Explorer, the system hangs and requires a reset to get back online. This sometimes happens when switching between domain servers. It seems to be a relatively random occurance and happens at different stations throughout the day. I was told by a friend that it could be b/c of the packet size being sent through the network. If that's the case, how can a check it/change it? I've tried updating the NIC driver, but that didn't seems to help. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated....

Thanks

If you have performance monitor installed it will give you reports on the network or how the services are running look for it under system tools. There are also network diagnostic tools that will provide info on the network and its bottlenecks.

Do you have WINS installed on your NT server?

Are your Windows 9x clients using DHCP? Now, since you have WINS installed, have you checked the WINS database? Are there duplicate entries for workstation names? There should be no more than 3 entries per workstation name. When was the last time the WINS database was flushed? Try flushing the database - all the clients will reregister in WINS the next time they log on. Also, make sure none of the clients are set to be Browser Master in the Network Properties, because in an NT domain, thePDC should always be browse master - unless there is a BDC in a remote location, whereas it is browse master for that "sub-net".

I had this happen with a couple of the machines that I work on. It ended up being a conflict between the video card drivers and the NIC drivers. See if your machines are all the same hardware wise, if they are try changing out some of the hardwareon a test machine. I ended up changing the video cards and have had no problem since.

I've checked the hardware and updated the NIC drivers, but neither fixed the problem.

Hi I have a network that had a problem such as yours. I was called to find the problem and I found it with no problem, on eof the puters was rnning at boot about 44% system rescoures. It seems the operator wanted to heve running, bonzi, icq, and yahoo instant messaging at all times, plus normal access to the interenet. I don't care how fast your connectio is it willnot work, so I might suggest you look at what is running on the 98se computer and check out system rescourse's. rockyolson

I've checked system resources and everything seems to be in a normal range(70% free).
