WIN98 hangs on reboot

By ross ·
I have a DELL L566cx with WIN98SE. When I do a shutdown and restart, the machine will sometimes hang on the reboot side on Windows SPLASH screen. I have to yank the power cord, reboot it, select Normal Mode, and then everyhting is fine. I did Ghost this machine original from an identical Dell Model. Any ideas?

This is a fairly common problem, and is usually caused by some kind of driver problem. To correct this:

1) Go into your system properties, hardware profiles and copy your original configuration, naming it Test or something. Reboot and select thetest configuration. Delete any devices that have an exclamation point or question mark, and reboot and see if this fixed it. If so, go to <End>

2)Now for the scary part - go into the device amanager and start disabling stuff, everything but thevideo, HDD, and mouse, and motherboard resources. Reboot, and see if that fixes it. If it does, go to <End>, if not, start disabling Motherboard resources one at a time, rebooting, etc.

<End> Begin enabling devices, one at a time, and booting into the test config. When the system hangs on reboot again, you have found the problem device, and can boot into your normal configuration, disable the offending device, and get on with it.

Oh yeah, don't forget to delete the test configuration after this is all over.

Correction to step 1: Delete any devices . . . should read: DISABLE any devices that have an exclamation . . .

Run MSCONFIG. Under the Advanced tab all the programs with check marks next to them will run at start up. Uncheck everything and reboot. If the reboot is successful start adding check marks back one at a time until you find the offending program

You have a systems resourses problem. The splash screen is still in system. that's why it is 320x400x256. No drivers are loaded yet.

Wven though the ghosted drive was the same machine it could be a little different.

Boot to safe mode and go to device manager. Go to Systems devices and remove everything. Then reboot and let win find the right drivers. For whats on your machine. I had to do this under the direction of a Microsoft Tech when I changed Motherboards and didn't do a clean load.

Good Luck Lee
