win98 hangs, trying to play audio cd

By cheezer ·
How can I fix the problem of my cd audio in win98? While my Grandson was playing some of his learning cds, he noticed that the cd wouldn't auto load. I checked the system resources, found autoinsert notification was still checked. I created a shortcut for him so he could play. When I tried to play an audio cd the system hangs, even while checking the properties on the multimedia properties screen. I uninstalled windows media player which had added the extension .cda to the audio cdrom, I also uninstalled realplayer which wouldn't recognize the extension. I am still not able to play the audio cd with cdplayer either. I downloaded audio crusher, and the cd plays and the .cda extension is gone. Can you help? Is this a windows problem? If so how can I fix it?

Thanks,
Jose'

Hello Jose,
This is for sure a windows problem where your CD-ROM driver jsut got mixed up.

You will need to remove the CD-Rom from your Device Manager (right hand click on My Computer, Properties, Device Manager) than restart Windows to re-install it.
However , do try to copy the CAB files of Win98 CD to your hard disk first as it might ask you for the CD and since you removed the drivers, you will not be able to reach it.

Regards
George

I also disconnected the cdrom, started windows then pluged the cables back, restarted windows, and it still won't work. What else could I do to fix this problem?

I forgot to mention this when I asked the question originally.

Thanks,
Jose'
