tech,
If your hard drive is not recognized after fdisk, it may be because you forgot to format it. Try FORMAT C:.

Lets get this straight. you went from not being able to access a cd in the drive to a complete disaster.....

First check and see if the cd rom in good. Boot with your 98 boot disk option 2 cd rom support. Put in CD DISC and try to access it.
If you can't try different CD ROM DRIVE..

A lot of the Compaq Deskpro system had a configuration and setup partition on the hard drive. (a non dos partition)..

If the Deskpro is one of that type system you will need to download a softpaq from Compaq to set up the CMOS on that system.

On the side of the case will be a label indicating the model and configuration..

If your system does not require this system partition the simply format the HD and proceed installing Win98..

Hope this helps ...

The best thing to do is to go to Compaq.com and locate technical support for the deskpro model that you are working on. It is difficult to get those computers to do what you want, and nearly impossible without certain setup files from Compaq. Haveyou tried to enter CMOS? Get there?
Compaq does make these files available, you just need to find them. Good luck.

There are three things I would check. First check your BIOS and make sure it is searching for the drive, then check the jumpers on both driver and ensure they are set as needed, third if all of those are set and you have double checked to make sureall cables are tight you might try another CD-ROM and see if that clears up the problem if so that would say that the CD-ROM is bad
