win98 installations

By zhouweiqin ·
Hi everybody,

I try to install win98 second edition to my old pentium 66, but during installation there was a Application Error Message,
it said :
win98 setup caused a General Protection Fault in Module KRNL 386.exe at 0001:805d.
What is this, win98 is not compatable with computer hardware? or installations error?

please help.

Thanks very much.

You will want to read article #Q224836 on the Microsoft support page.

Go to Microsoft.com and I think you'll find that the system that you are trying to load Win98 SE does not meet the minimum processor requirements for that new of a version of software. Also, did you format the drive with an older diskette for your older operating system? Win 95 uses Fat16, and Win98 SE uses Fat32 for it's partitions. This may also be a problem. Good luck.

Hi there!
I had the same problem on a 486@100 with 24MB memory and 1,2GB HDD.
When i made a minimal installation using the switches
INSTALL /is /iq
it worked.
I also believe it is important to have a partition of at least 500MB to succeed.Hope this helps.
Tom
