Win98 logon failures under Win2k Server

By rr0s3 ·
I have Win98 clients that I am migrating from an NT environment to 2k. I am aware of the similarities AND differences between the two and thought I had accounted for everything. Except for a couple of things that seem frustratingly simple....

1) My Win98 clients are no longer executing their logon scripts. These are the same .BAT files that were being executed daily from the old NT PDC. The files were put into the NETLOGON of the new 2k PDC. I have pointed to the .BATs the Users profiles, have ensured that the 98 machines are logging onto the domain, that the client for ms networks is the primary logon, etc.... Still not executing any logon scripts.

2) Along similar lines. I have specified in the Users profiles that drive Z: is to be mapped to the Users home folder. It isn't mapping either.... I assume this problem is related/linked to the other, but I can't put it all together.

Any ideas or solutions would be appreciated.

Win98 logon failures under Win2k Server

I figured out the first part of my problem on my own. Thought that a HIGH point award would motivate people and generate some answers...... Oh well. The second part of my question still exists, plus I've now run into a slightly different problem. See my post regarding my new problem. This is where i put my points for this.

Point value changed by question poster.

the first thing to check is
1: did you move the bat file to the sysvol folder
C:\WINNT\SYSVOL\sysvol\yourdomain.com\scripts
2: in the win 98 client network prop under microsoft networking make sure you changed the domain to the new one..
3: never use z its reserved in windows 2k
4: did you dcpromo you server?

1: The bat is in the sysvol folder and is showing up normally in the netlogon share.
2: The clients are logging onto the domain completely and all settings match in all areas. (my config.pol is being applied perfectly from the netlogon share)
3: I'm unaware of any drive letter reservations that exist in win2k... Please educate me more... ??
4: I did not dcpromo this server. It's actually the domain master that was installed clean as the first server (obv) in a completely new domain. AllI did was redirect the clients from the old to the new network.

Best info I've gotten yet. Still have some questions though...

you need the server to be a DC and AD running.
the user.bat script file you made can not be exacuted unless you go to AD under the user and in profile add the file name *.bat to the logon script ...

All recommendations have or had already been done...

I'm still having a problem with the scripts not successfully completing
on their own. As a temporary work around, I am installing the script
manually with a local .BAT and a startup shortcut to it. Crude but
effective until I get better direction.

Points for wmjd@miliser.net are a gimme for your time/patience...
