Win98 new PC only, but want to upgrade

By alan.robinson14 ·
I know I shoudnt be asking this because it's probably illegal.

I have a Win98 "For new PC only" but I want to upgrade my Win 95 without reformatting the hard disk.

I tried SYS c:
to copy the Win98 operating system to my Hard Disk, this workedbut the SETUP install still says "Use a Windows 98 Upgrade CD"

My only suggestion is to boot into dos mode and delete the c:\windows directory

This will basically uninstall windows while leaving the rest of your files intact (assuming none of your files are in the windows directory ) :)

You should then beable to install 98, you will also have to install most of you programs again to regain registry setting, etc. but any data files will still be there.

The best utility for deleting the windows directory in dos mode is deltree. You may have to search for it, I thinks its on the installation cd for 98.

This should work, but no guarantees.

Both posted answers will work but the second one is much better. Deleting the whole windows directory means that you will also be deleting some files (*ini's, dll's, etc.) related or being used by other programs installed. Also, you might want to only rename all files starting with win* (xxx*, for example) in the windows directory, then start setting-up windows 98.
