WIN98-SE AND WIN 2000 DUAL BOOT

By VJDX ·
I HAVE WIN 98-SE ALREADY LOADED ON MY PC (ON MY #1 OF 2 HARDDRIVES) AND AM IN NEED OF HAVING WIN 2000 INSTALLED (HOPEFULLY ON THE 2ND DRIVE, WITHOUT IMPACTING THE INSTALLED #1 DRIVE) FOR WORK RELATED SOFTWARES TO RUN. IS THIS POSSIBLE AND IF SO HOW?!!!
THANKS,
-J

Yes,

Just Install Win2000 to the second Harddrive.
When the computer boots you will have a boot menu.

Windows 2000
Windows

Just select wich OS to start.

Select to do a clean install, when asked.
Installing with the setup floppy in the order prompted by the onscreen instructions, you will get to the part to insert the cd-rom,proceed to follow the onscreen instructions,it then will show a screen to choose the partition to install WIN2K on,use the down arrow key to select the drive and then follow on screen instructions.

Also, remember if you want to access files from OS to the other format the second drive (the Win2K partion) FAT32 not NTFS. Win 98 cannot read a NTFS partion.

Run setup from DOS mode for best results. For this you have to search winnt.exe file, in winnt directory of the WIN2K installation CD. type winnt /b at this directory. During installation it will ask you to either update your old OS or you want to have Dual Booting.

The simplest way and the way that gives you the most versatility, is to get Partition Magic from Power Quest and use it to set up the bootable partitions as well as any other partitions. I have used this program for years and it has never caused anyproblems, but has solved quite a few. You can use it on your present setup, make or change partitions, etc. without losing any info or proggies you currently have installed...no re-loading apps or OS's.
