Win98 SE Boot Problem

By scotth ·
I had an instance where my computer just froze at a black screen in the middle of the boot process. How can I rebuild or restore the boot files? I was able to get into safe mode. I also have my WIN98 disk as well. The Startup Disk that I had created seemed to do no good. Thanks in advance.

Win98 SE Boot Problem

by dheupel In reply to Win98 SE Boot Problem

I have seen this problem on Dell computers with integrated 3Com NICs. This happens when the NIC cannot successfully auto-sense/negotiate a connection to the network infrastructure hardware (hub/switch) - especially if it is a Cisco switch. Find out what the ports on the network hub/switch are set for (i.e.: 10BaseT - Half Duplex), and then boot the Windows machine in Safe Mode. Open the Network Properties, select the network interface card, and then force the card to use the same negotiationscheme (10BaseT - Half Duplex, or whatever your switch/hub is set for).

HTH & Good Luck.

Most probably it is an add on device that is cuasing the problewm . Start in safe mode , then go to device manager and disable any adon devices that you are using eg NICs , modems , sound cards etc . Restart your computer in normal mode if it now starts , enable the devices one by one and restart several times . Hopefully you'll find the problematic device . you might have to install a new driver for this device or change its properties or you might have to replace it .You can also try deletingthis device and restarting . Windows will detect it automatically if it is a plug and play device .

look at bootlog.txt in the root dir. The last driver is the one that is locking up the pc.
