Win98 SE Tapi problems

By grbeckmeyer ·
A customer running Win98 SE gets this error if they click on control panel/modems: "TAPISRV caused an invalid page fault in module TAPISRV.EXE at...", same as in MS article Q241886 (that's not the fix though) Also get TAPI errors when trying to runHyperterminal or AOL on dial-up, or Citrix connection via LAN/ISDN connection. Can still connect with any of these options, but just get the annoying error message.

Clicking on Telephony icon in control panel gives hourglass a few seconds then nothing, and I've also noticed there is no Network neighborhood icon on the desktop.

Here's what I've tried so far- Article above does not apply, stepped through 3 methods in Q254332, Removed all programs from auto-startup in registry, win.ini, etc... Ran System file checker and restored original files(this fixed a shutdown problem but not the Tapi error), updated modem driver(USR PCI 56kfax), removed modem & all networking components. I'm trying to avoid a reinstall of the OS as this is a home computer loaded up

You have exhausted any other solutions other than the one that you have as a last resort, use only the CD to re-load the operating system and you will keep all applications intact.Good Luck

Yes I know that would fix it but that is something the customer can do himself

remove dial_up adaptor from your device manager and reboot your system.
add dial-up adaptor and the required prtocols such as 'TCP/IP' for a dial-up connection and client for microsoft networks (if reqd.) from the network icon in the control panel.this will fix your problem

good luck

This may or may not help you, but since you said that the Network Neighborhood icon is missing from the desktop, it is something for you to check without reloading the entire OS. If the customer used something like TweakUI to remove the Network Neighborhood icon, it can cause all sorts of weird problems when trying to do anything with networking. If that is the case, unhide it and see what happens. Maybe you'll get lucky!

I agree, I think the missing Network Neighborhood is related. Unfortunately, my primary contact for this customer has been getting a little rude because we can't fix problems that he's already tried to fix for a month with a mere 5 minute phone call, so I cannot try anymore on this
