Win98 Slow Shutdown & Startup

By janstie ·
Not a shattering problem, but annoying when having to do a complete shutdown and cold start, when I shutdown, it takes about 40 seconds to bring up the Windows 98 logo screen (with the "Windows is shutting down" message), then a further 45 seconds to get to get to the orange "it is now safe to switch off your computer" message.

As far as boot & startup are concerned, this is not so bad but still slow (I have inserted bootdelay=0 in the Win.ini file).

Any suggestions as to how I might speed things up.

Win98 version is 4.10.1998.

If it's not hanging up and stalling your PC, there's no problem. You got a delay in closing probably because of a connected hardware that is not functioning well or an outdated driver with Resource conflict.

What happens during Windows 98 shutdown is, it tries to perform many functions before closing Windows including:
(1) Completion of all disk write functions.
(2) Flush of disk cache.
(3) Runs the Close Window code to close all currently running programs.
(4) Transitions all protected-mode drivers to real mode.

If you have a NIC card connected, try removing it and its driver through "Device Manager." I have known this as one of notorious cause. The NIC driver.

Enjoy!

Took 30 seconds off the shutdown time. Disabling the Antivirus programme took off another 30 seconds.

Hi, 98 does go through the process listed above, but the culprit may be your virus scanner (assuming one is loaded). It may be set to scan at shutdown, startup or both. disable it to test responsiveness of the system during boot and shutdown. If youdon't notice the same kinds of delays, you know the system is being checked.

Well, I often have this problem as well, and it is usually because I have used it for too long. Sometimes, after too long times of usage, it will hang or take a long time to shut down. yes, it could be because that your virus scanner is scanning, but it will not take so long. What windows is doing at shutdown is to "unload" the programs that you have used. so don't use too many programs, or shut it down when you do not use it.

The following should only be accomplished after you have backed up your system registry first. Any modifications you make to your system based upon these instructions are your decision alone. I am simply making suggestions here that have worked onmy systems and I do not desire to be held responsible for damage to your system or lost data. Backups of all data is always recommended before making registry or system changes such as these.

To back up your system registry, start your machine in DOS by hitting the "F8" key when you see "Starting Windows" and choose the menu selection for "Command Prompt". Go to the C:\WINDOWS directory. Type "attrib -r -s -h system.dat", "attrib -r -s -h user.dat" (without the quotations). Copy SYSTEM.DAT to SYSDAT.OLD. Copy USER.DAT to USERDAT.OLD. Copy WIN.INI to WININI.OLD. Copy SYSTEM.INI to SYSINI.OLD. Type "attrib +r +s +h system.dat" and "attrib +r +s +h user.dat". You have now saved the 4 files that make up your registry and they all have the file extensio

Interesting, but you ran out of text space or something: just before completing the instructions for backing up the registry.
