win98 sound error

by kwoerner . Updated 25 years, 5 months ago

I have several win98 2nd ed. machines with the same problem. Windows Media Player will play all sounds. Yet when inserting sounds into PPoint or other MS apps, I get the error, “MMSYSTEM236, no wave device that can play files in the current formatis installed.” No conflicts are showing. I followed the advice of Microsoft article Q133365 – remove and reinstall audio compression and the three msacm system files. This fixes the problem temporarily, but it’s back inside of 2 days. Any ideas as to the cause of this and a permanent fix?
