Win98 Start Programs Menu

By jeff ·
I am running Win98 and have a lot of items installed on my PC. So my Start, Programs, list is quite large. I would love to be able to have my list fold out to multiple columns like Win95 did. I hate having to scroll up and down to look at everything in my programs menu. Is there a setting to make if fold out into multiple columns like Win95??

You can make Win98 behave like Win 95 with this registry edit. BE SURE TO BACK UP THE REGISTRY FIRST!
Start - Run - regedit
go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\EXPLORER\ADVANCED.
Right click in open area of right panel. Chose NEW then STRING VALUE. Name it StartMenuScrollPrograms. Then double click the new value (StartMenuScrollPrograms) and add the value False. I can't remember if you have to re-boot to have the change take effect. Try it. To restore the original Win 98 behaviour, change the value to True.

It Worked!!! Thanks!!! FYI, A reboot was needed after the registry entry was added.

Windows 98 included the scrolling of the Programs Menu, using the arrow as a new way of viewing long list of programs.
The other options were to create shortcuts,by adding to desktop or creating folders. There is not an option to change it .

It looks like I have forgotten the directory, but I think a program will also be acceptable? Go to http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-1461986-100-1550593.html?tag=st.dl.1461986_106_1.lst.td to download the program, it's free. Hope this helps, Maozy.
