Win98 startup problems
Lockedby lori · about 23 years, 1 month ago
I have a brand new hard drive that has been fdisked and formatted for Win98. I have only loaded Win98 and Office and am having some problems at startup. Sometimes Win98 will bring up the option screen to run in safe mode. If I choose safe mode and let Windows load, then restart my computer, Windows will load perfectly with no problems.
Any ideas or suggestions as to why it does this occassionaly?Topic is locked -

this could be a barrage of things.. looks like a driver isnt loading correctly,,
have u ran defrag and full scandisk.. after that i would go into device manager and check all devices for any conflicts… also double check your bios settings.. are u hitting any keys during the bootrup sequence if u are it will bring up the option screen depending on what keys you hit!!!
hopefully this helps..

Dear Lori,
You have corrupted Windows 98 CAB files when you installed the OS. It is probably your CD that Contains the Windows 98, also make sure in your system BIOS, Setup – that your antiVirus Program is set to off mode.-

Run “msconfig” and do a selective startup. Uncheck all startup files and reboot. Run “msconfig ” again, but this time select a single startup file and reboot again. Continue this process until you find which file contains the corrupted driver. Then you can troubleshoot the file that is giving you trouble. However, since you only have WIN98 and Office installed, I would probably reformat the drive and start over. It could be that a file was just installed improperly the first time.

If you made a start up disk during installation, use it to boot the system and use it with out the cdrom support. It has diagnostics tools that will run diagnostics to give your system the files to complete a good start up

I have seen a similar problem to this a few times, to know if it is the same try this . . the next time it brings up the menu to boot safe mode select Logged instead. If the system never fails while booting with the logged options the problem is your video drivers. Go get latest version, or use reference drivers if available. This should solve the problem. If it still has problems when booting logged, then the problem is different than the problems I have seen.
Good luck

It definately looks like you have some driver issues that are not quite right with your system. I would boot up in Safe Mode and go to Device Manger and blow away as much as you can and let 98 redetect your hardware. Use your OEM disks where you can to load the proper drivers. You may want to check some of the web sites to verify that you have the current drivers. Verify that you are seeing the HDD parameters properly as well.

Lori,
When you reload Windows 98, did you also update driver for your internal device such as Video Card and so to Windows 98 also? Make sure your motherboard BIOS is latest version. Note down your internal card brand and model information, then download driver for Windows 98 if available. In some cases, Windows 98 does have driver for these devices, but are not very good. The vendor newer update are better becuase they update and fixed there driver from incoming Technical Support call reporting known problem.
Your problem is mostly cause by driver. Boot in safe mode, then check Device Manager for unknown or unused driver. But be very cautious when removing device’s driver within safe mode!

Windows 98’s best asset is utilities. Boot up normally. You may need CD support. Run the System File Checker (sfc.exe). Just start it with the default settings. That’ll check you system files. You may need the CD to restore a file if it finds one corrupted. If so, select “Restore”.
I would run this utility following every software install.
All the rest of the utilities can accessed via Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information…Tools Menu.
I can’t figure out why MS hasn’t engineered Windows to prevent software installs from overwriting system files, but they haven’t.-
