WIN98 system cannot browse internet

By randy.sigler ·
We have an HP Win98 system that has stopped resolving internet sites. Local network works fine.

We have tried both NIC (cable internet) and dialup (PPP to ISP) with same results.

Connections are fine and WINIPCFG shows IP being assigned, but the system still gets the 'Page Not Found' error as if the DNS is not working.

There are a couple of things that I would try. If you are sitting behind a proxy server, check the configuration for that and ensure it is correct. I would also remove and then install again the TCP/IP suite, configure it correctly again, and see where that gets you. Hope that helps.

I had the same problem. Except that I have an IBM
clone put together, with an AuthenticAMD AMD-K6(tm) 3D processor. Running Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.2222 A. I had to completely wipe my drive
and reinstall windows, with the origonal Internet
Explorer (I had down loaded IE 6). I don't if
that was the problem or not. It's possible it was
a virius. I realy don't know. Try it, it might
work. Good luck!!!
P.S.
I have sence downloaded IE 5.5 and everything
is working fine.

Luck to ya!
Richard

Please check your Lan Cable and Please find out if the mscp Client is installed in your windows 98 OS.

Please check your Lan Settings(if you have installed a Proxy Server) from the Tools>Internet Options>Click on the Connection Tab>Lan Checkings and See if you have entered the Automatic Configuration Script Address or if you have entered the Proxy Server Address.

If the Proxy Server does not work Uncheck the boxes and just click on Automatically Detect Settings and try again.Probably thisshould work.

If this also does not help Please see that you have added the Necessary Protocols and Adapter Drivers.

Please be free to get back to me and let me know if this worked.

Thanks for your patience

Yes, it is most likely the IE has corrupted and affected the windows system.
Use the "windowsupdates" links to Windows site; then click on the installed components (Yes, installed); then click on the IE.
It will re-install the IE.
(If you have the CD for IE, then you can re-install directly from it.)

Then all will be OK.
