Win98 to ME upgrade

By StanleyCal ·
Just did a new install of Win98 on a new P4 with off the shelf parts. No problems were encountered but when upgrading to Win ME, the system freezes half way thru and I get the message:
(a fatal exception 0E has occured at 0028:C004CE04 in VDX VFAT(01) + 0000B648. The current application will be terminated.) I get the blank blue screen and have to manually reboot. This has happened twice with the same message. Is this problem in Win ME or is there some other problem evident that I hav'nt ran across yet? Thanks for any insight you can give me on this. Stan

I would not upgrade WIN98 to ME. For me WIN98 was more stable than ME. I would recomend upgrading to XP. But do a clean install. When I upgraded win ME to XP all my blue screens dissappered. So I removed ME and did a clean install and ever since than I haven't had a single problem. Good Luck

Something told me not to go and buy WinME, just because it came in a pretty box :) Worryfree operation is what I'm mainly after. Am running 1Gig of ram and had heard that Win98 had trouble or ran into problems if you had over 500 megs of ram. This was the main reason I wanted to update to WinME. Should I be worried about this with Win98?

I agree with Joe, I use windows Me, I like itr much more than win 98. Although, I do NOT recommend upgrade, do a clean install and you should not have too many troubles, just make sure you have all the correct drivers for your hardware such as video card etc. Sometimes win Me doesn't have a driver for it. I have a 3D card and have to have a special driver for it, but hey, don't let that stop you. Good luck with it!
