Win98SE Crashing on install & just after

By Technomancer ·
Recently I started getting the idea that while attending school it would be beneficial to have multiple operating systems on my machine. I purchased and installed a removable drive kit (new with 4 carriers) and a couple of drives (used 2GB) and whenI tried to install Win98, it crashed while installing. I've installed hundreds of times with Win98SE and this is the first time it has ever crashed on install. I'm curious to know if it could be a bad sector on the HDD since it is used or some otherreason. I purchased 2 used 2GB drives and both crash on install. I've installed using the tray with Win2K Pro and it works fine, but that drive I've had a while and it worked fine before.

Any suggestions?

Yes, bad sectors on the drive could cause your problem.

However, I would not expect 3 different drives to fail the same way.

I would check the drive settings in BIOS setup.

What I suspect, is that you have a DMA mode set that works for the W2K drive, but is not compatable with the older drives.

You may need to force a lower DMA mode, or no DMA in order to get proper file access on the older drives.

Another possability, is that they were formated with a different access mode then they are booting up with.
You may need to force the BIOS to either use or not use LBA mode.

I had a problem recently similar to that. it was the controller on the hd. so I had to make it a slave drive since the slave uses the controller on the master drive.have you tried fdisk /mbr or just fdisk and then a format to verify drive functionality

I'll check and see if they work fine as slave drives, but I don't think this is the answer.

If Win2k is already installed you will have problems after installing Win98. Win98 cannot see that a later OS is installed and will try to "fix" the MBR. As a rule the older OS needs to be installed first because the newer OS can see it and set upa dual boot screen and protect and not try to take over the MBR. However, Partition Magic or Partition Commander can overcome this.

SOrry, you misunderstood, I have a hard drive pull out so that I can put in different drives allowing me to have different OS's and the problem is with the Win98 install on 2 different drives. Now when I install Win2K, it works fine it's just the 98drives that give me fits.
