win98se fatal error with winipcfg

By boonhock ·
How to remove and re-install TCP/IP on win98se.
I have the same problem with win95 with winipcfg was run. The solution provided by Microsoft was to run ws2backup.bat in dos prompt for win95. I can't locate this command in win98se. I had also tried to remove and re-install TCP/IP, but still the same problem. Also tried to re-copy "sysbckup" to c:\windows\system directory, but still not working.

Any help?

Thanks in advance.

In Control Panel, click on Network. Remove everything. Do not re-boot. Open System and remove the network card. Do not re-boot. In System, remove the modem and net card. Do not re-boot. If Modem still exisits in Control Panel, remove it. NowShut-Down and power everything off for thirty seconds.

Boot to a DOS prompt and delete the Swap file and run Scandisk. Reboot Win to Safe Mode, run Scandisk again and then Defrag. Start, Shut Down, and power off.

Powering-up, Win will recognize the "new hardware" and proceed to install it. re-boot after each installation completes.

Since this is a drastic step, copy "older" files over their newer versions. After re-booting; it's Windows, you have to tell it twice... perform the necessary upgrades, one file(s) at a time, re-booting each time.

Tedious? Yes. This is the brute-force approach.

I had tried your steps, but still not working. I will try Technet solution - Q181599.

Not sure what Technet Solution Q181599 has told you to try but you have to either delete or rename the driver files associated with your Networking in order to fix the problem. Uninstalling your Network Componants does no good if you have corrupted driver files because the driver files ARE NOT REMOVED during the uninstall process!! This is a fact! You can uninstall and reinstall a zillion times and still have the same problem because the same drivers are being used until you get rid of them. Remove the following driver files and then do whatever else Technet says to do, reinstall Networking and I bet it works for you!

VDHCP.386
VNBT.386
VTCP.386

Good Luck
