win98se installation problems

By Celsius451 ·
i have a liscensed version of win98se and currently have win98 installed. when i try to install it, the full version wont upgrade the original, it says i have to go buy the upgrade. does anyone know how to fool the installation so it will install over win98 anyway and still keep the settings like an upgrade? thanks.

You have an OEM version its made for computers with out windows. The only way i know to install it is to format and then install it. but then you have to reinstall all your software. But you'll lose all those settings

there is one other way that i thought of. first backup your registry key hkey_current_user. format your disk and install se from scratch. then restore (or edit) the registry for hkey_current_user. i usually don't recommend editing the registry but you have nothing to lose and this contains all your current settings

If you delete the files (but not the folders) in the c:\windows directory, the install will proceed. If you backup the registry, you can also restore it back to keep your old settings. A previous answer to your question details backing up the registry.

Not the recommended way to go...if you delete the Win directory's files you risk losing lots of .ini files and other settings used by apps elsewhere on the drive. The best way is to install from scratch. Assuming you have originals or backups of theapps you use this should pose only a small inconvenience. I had to do it myself. MS really hosed users with 98SE and upgrades as I had an OEM version of 98, too. You can try deleting the files as described above and backing up the registry, but I honestly think you risk more than you gain with the potential for numerous problems later.

Instead of all the deleting and reinstalling and things as suggested already, try going into your c:\windows directory and rename win.com to win.old.

Once your win.com is renamed, try installing Windows 98 SE overtop of Windows 98.

If that doesn't work, just copy win.old back to win.com and your Win98 still works just fine.
