Win98SE periodically hangs on shutdown w

By cory ·
When drives are mapped on Win98SE, shutdown hangs frequently (not always). When I remove the maps, the computer has no problems shutting down. I have tried everything Microsoft and Others list for shutdown resolution, installed the shutdown supplement, updated ALL drivers, even regressed drivers to older versions, removed everything not used, changed NICs, Video cards, etc. The only resolution I've found is to disconnect all network drives. As you can imagine, that is not acceptable. Has anyone found a resolution for this situation? The config list follows:

ABIT BH6 Motherboard with newest bios,
Intel PRO100+ management adapter (tried others),
ATI Xpert 98 AGP Video,
Yamaha 3D soundcard,
PIII 450 or 500
13GB HD
64MB RAM
Win98SE w/ shutdown supplement
Connecting to WinNT 4.0 SP6a
Intel 10/100 switch
Certified CAT5E

Thank You in Advance!

I don't have a solution, but I do have a workaround.

1. From the Start Menu, choose choose Log Off...
2. From the log on dialog box, press Ctrl+Alt+Del
3. Click the shut down button.

I'd love to see a fix on this myself.

I've seen this with 3Com NIC's, but never with Intel. The previous answer will work, however.

Also, if you are running any antivirus software, disable the "Scan floppies at Shutdown".
You gotta love how Microsoft royally screwed up something that should have been left alone [it takes long enough to start - I'd have preferred a longer shutdown as long as I knew the thing WOULD shut down]

we have a customer with the same problem. I have found that you need the latest driver for the 3com nics. The default for win98 does not work correctly, and the one with the diagnostics also does not work. It doesn't always happen, but in that case,it corrected the customers problem.
