Win98SE reported as 98 1st ed.

By jdwellssr ·
Three machines on network are Win98SE workstations. Of these three, the OS was built from scratch on one, imaged with Drive Image, and placed on the other two (we have licenses for all three). A Win98SE install CD for systems without windows was used on new hard drives. Now the one machine on which the OS was first built is showing in SysInfo that it is Win98 Gold 4.10.1998. The other "children" machines still show Win98SE, 4.10.2222. Now on that machine which is reporting 4.10.1998, I cannot install software which requires SE, such as Roxio Easy CD Creator 6. Many other programs which require SE have previously been loaded on this machine and run fine, and usb support continues fine as always. Windows Updates have been run successfully on this machine monthly for two years.

Any thoughts on how the reported OS got changed? Can I change the reported OS in registry and get SE requisite programs to install? I do not want to rebuild this machine from scratch -- I have two years of not only Windows updates but also program and driver updates for many many many software titles and hardware items.

I have the MS Win98 SE update CD that was used on a different machine long ago. Is there a way to use that without requiring reload of lots of updates afterwards?

Thanks for the help.

You can try running system file checker (SFC) from the run menu.

Before that though, check the files in the Windows folders.

Except for updates and files for installed programs, most of the System files for W98 SE should have a date of 4/23/1999

This would not be the first time that a wrong Windows update got installed on a system.

I suspect that you will need to do more in the registry than just change the OS version key.

Other potential root causes include:

A virus or worm.

A badly written software installer.

While not as 'clean' as I like, if worst comes to worst, you can install W98 over itself.
You may need to delete a couple of the Windows system files like in order to install SE over 98.
