Win98SE Scandisk Error in Safe Mode

By pierrejamme ·
I have been unable to run scandisk, even in Safe Mode for some time. I thought it was a bad hard drive so replaced that. But now am thinking it might be the Promise Ultra66 ATA controller.
Scandisk barely starts and I get:
A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C00078C0 in VXD VMM (01) + 000068C0.

Without knowing the history of the machine, I would suggest re-loading the motherboard drivers and associated files, and re-try your scan disk.

Have you updated the Promise driver?

VXD files are virtual device drivers.
Any number of things can corrupt a VXD.

The most common issue with VXD files is memory problems.

Someone else may have a fix, but I usually end up clearing out at least the VMM32 files, and re-installing Windows.

Oh, I have no problems with my Promise Ultra ATA under W98.

Tried this it didn't help. I ended up calling Dell and they had me clear the VRAM after two hours of other guesses, that worked. The VRAM had become corrupt.

Question for the charles.
Let me be clear on this:
You want me to delete the directory; C:\windows\system\vmm32
And the file c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd
and re-install Windows 98SE, is that correct?

PS: I have a Dell XPST500 and I had Dell Promise drivers installed when this started, so I reverted to older Promise drivers and that didn't help.
