Win98SE Screen Pwd....Esc. key Bypasses

By Devinefv ·
When my system boots up, and windows begins, near the end of my GUI loading up, it prompts me for the password [as it should]. After I enter it I am granted access, and I get to my GUI [Great!]. Unfortunetely, I can also get to the GUI by hitting the Escape key though. Can this be fixed? and how?
Thanks for your input!

Windows 98 is NOT a password protected operating system.

Windows NT, 2000, and XP can be set to require a password to log in.

Under Windows 98, without the password, you only have access to the local PC, and not any connected network.

There are 3rd party software packages that can be used to lock down a W98 system and require the password to log in.

I have a link to 1 package, but it is not on this PC.

to Understand what is happening here...it
1- Create a user...
through the control Panel password option..

customize your desktop.....put some background image...create some shortcuts to files...etc etc..

Now reboot..

enter your system..
1- via the new created user....
you will get all the customiztion that user did to the desktop ....and else where.

Now reboot again..

this time choosing the cancel option...

you will get the default customiztion of desktop.... the one before the user was created..

..so although Win98 is not reliable on security...any one can get access like you did when cancelling instead of using the users..

...it does allow ...a user customization of enviroment in which thet particular user works...on his PC..

hope it helps..

Note: Your machine must be part of a Windows domain for this tweak to work, as the user must be authenticated by the network.

By default Windows 9x doesn't require a valid network username and password combination for a user to bypass the logon and gain access to the local machine. Any user accessing the computer can in fact press ESC or "Cancel" to bypass the logon screen.

This functionality can be changed to require validation by the network before allowing access.

Open your registry and go to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon

Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value called "MustBeValidated" and set it to equal "1" to require successful authentication.

Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

After rebooting any user that wishes to use that computer will be forced to enter his or her username and password in order to begin using the computer.
