Win9x Machine no video when booting

By randy ·
My son has a couple of old Compaq desktops that he uses for work. And when he boots either of them up there is no video at all. He thought he had a bad monitor, but the monitor works fine when hooked up to his bosses PC (which he is borrowing for the time being). Both these computers have integrated video on the mother board. When I brought them to my house to check out I hooked them up on my own monitor and keyboard and mouse. They came up just fine. I had no problem with the video. Whenhe takes them back home & hooks them up with his monitor and keyboard & mouse they don't have video again. I know in the past in my position as tech support & network admin I have had problems with PC's where a bad cable or bad mouse or keyboard would cause this problem, and I had to unplug the mouse or keyboard to start booting the machine till the video came back & then plug in the mouse or keyboard again while the machine booted. Have you seen a problem like this before? What could be causing this?

First, NEVER hot plug or unplug a PS/2 keyboard or mouse. You are at a very high risk of damaging either the device or the PS/2 port on the PC.

I suspect that the problem is that your sons monitor does not support the default video mode on the Compaqs.
That however does not explain no video at POST.

Try connection a video extension cable to your sons monitor (unless the monitor is one where you can change the cable).
There may just be a dirty or pushed in pin on the monitor cable.

The monitor my son has is the Compaq monitor that came with one of the 2 Compaq PC's (I think they are both old Presario's) so there is no problem with compatibility. The monitor has always worked before. It just stopped working one day. And like I said, the monitor works with other computers he has connected it to. We can try the video extension cable to see, but have you ever known a problem where some other cable could be causing a short or causing the video to not display? Any other suggestions?

Hi, and you tell me?? I have had monitors work great on their own machine and then dump yet work on any other machine. I simply no longer trust the monitor for resale and use it for test bench.
I would check with local pc repair and get a different monitor that works with the machine and keep going. Used monitors are cheep if you look for them.
What you are describing is a "pluged in too many times conectivity problem" of wear.

I think Answer 1 has a point! Compatibility between the video card and the monitor can be an issue. It's not simply a matter of both being from the same manufacturer.

Also check the BIOS and see that Video is on PCI as opposed to all other settings.

Compatibility can be a problem, I know. But it is not the problem in this case. Trust me, I've been in this business since the early 80's, and I've seen many of these problems before. This Compaq monitor & Compaq PC were bought together as a package deal and were actually designed to work together. They have worked perfectly fine together for several years with no problem. We may just be having a problem with the age of the units. Things do get old & wear out sometimes. The BIOS & video settings are fine.
