WIN9x PC can't find NT4 server

By cpwilliams ·
We have several Win95 or 98 PCs that cannot access a new Winnt 4.0 server. Message states that the computer or sharename cannot be found. We have no problem with w2k PCs accessing the same server. We have IP client config done already. The server name is 6 characters. We cannot map to it or browse thru network neighborhood.

WIN9x PC can't find NT4 server

Without any additional information, your issue is somewhat difficult to troubleshoot. However, I can offer this... make sure that the NT server is a member of the same domain of which the workstations are members.

If you can offer any additional information on your network it would be helpful, such as: how many other Windows NT servers you have on the LAN; are there any Win2K servers on this same network; your network's IP configuration (DCHP?, WINS?, clients and server on same subnet?, etc.)...

We have 3 NT4 servers, manually assign IP addresses, the client and the new server (all servers) are on the same subnet mask. This new server is the only one that can't be accessed. I have checked network properties on the other servers to compare and can't find a difference in setup.

Can the server see other resources on the network that the clients in question can also see?

Yes, the new server can see the other servers and can even access data on the PC that cannot reach it - (file & print sharing is on the PC)

What is the role of this new NT server ???

Is it a member server or a domain controller ??

Are you using a workgroup or a domain model ??

This problem should not occur on a workgroup and the new computer is a member server . But if you have just added a PDC then the win95/98 PC should log on to the domain before it can browse domain resources , you can set this up in the client for microsoft networks properties by stating the PDC's IP address . the next time you logon you will get thedomain logon box . You can logon to the domain using any existing account on the domain .

Good Luck !!!

The server is a member server and has been functional for 6-8 weeks. Other Win9X PCs can access it, but we can find no descrepancy in the setups. These PCs are older (120MHZ)We are logging onto the network and can access the other servers (PDC & BDC). Sometimes, we can get to the new server, but not consistently. We are using the hosts file to identify the servers. We can ping the new server by IP address - not name. I have issued the net use command and gotten access to the server and then 5 minutes later cannot get to it.

Is your new server using DHCP to get it's IP? I faced similar problem when I setup my server to use DHCP instead of fixed IP.

Do you have more than one trnsport protocol installed on all the machines ?? if yes Please check the default protocol ( the one on the top in bidibg order ) on all computers and make sure you have the same protocol on the top . On multiple protocol systems different computers could be using different protocols for communication , so it is best to have only one protocol installed , please check this .

Just like to comment that TCP/IP does cause problems sometimes when Win95/98 clients try to map drives on a NT machine . So if there isn't a very good reason for using TCP/IP ( ie intranet apps or routing ) you should avoid using it on a LAN . Netbeui is a very efficient protocol for small non-routed networks . I switched from TCP/IP to netbeui some time back and have hardly had resource sharing or name resolution problems .

Good Luck !!!

We found a solution. Although we have always used the hosts file on the individual PCs, we set up the lmhosts file on the PC (Microsoft kb article Q150/8/00.asp) and it appears to work consistently. Thanks so much to all who replied.
