Please state the full error message here. It may require just a Repair of Windows from a Windows XP CD.

You should also download the Testing Utility for your HDD and test it to make sure that it's actually working.

HDD in Note Books have a very hard life and quite often die due to vibration and knocks it's quite possible that the HDD is actually damaged or faulty and this will give errors like this.

If you don't know the maker of the HDD in your NB you can always use SeaTools available at

While the error message may be incorrect for your Brand of HDD it will at the very least tell you if the drive is working correctly or not and then you'll know how to proceed. If this is still Under Guarantee I would first remove the drive and save your DATA because in every case the maker will erase the drive and attempt to reload Windows to see if you have a software problem. In doing this they erase your data without a second thought.

You can always fit any NB HDD to a 2.5 inch USB Caddy and attach it to another computer to save your data. You may need to take ownership of your Files and that is done by following these directions at;en-us;308421

If you have encrypted your files you'll also need to save the Encryption Key so you'll be able to actually read your Data when it is transfered to another working computer. Or they will be nothing better than Garbage and unusable to you. The way to save the Encryption Key varies depending on the method used to encrypt the files but you can always find out where the Key is held by opening your Encryption Program and reading the Help Files on Saving Your Encryption Key.
