By whodisme ·
I installed Win 2000 advanced server with ntfs. I want to go back to FAT32. I can't even get to a dos prompt with startup disks?
How do i get rid of this file system?

Windows 2000 Advanced server uninstall?

by Kirill Lozovatsky In reply to Windows 2000 Advanced ser ...

When you upgrade from Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows NT to Windows 2000, the Setup wizard displays a warning message informing you that your current operating system will be replaced if you continue. Windows 2000 does not contain an uninstall feature to let you return to your previous Windows operating system.
If the disk is using NTFS, then the options for returning to Windows 95 or Windows 98 are limited. Windows 95/98 does not read or recognize NTFS, and you cannot convert the disk to use the FAT or FAT32 file system using Windows 2000. The bootable disk you use and the drive where you want to install Windows 95/98 cannot be NTFS.
Microsoft does not support any third-party solutions for converting NTFS to a FAT or FAT32 file system.

But you can use 3d party tools such as Partition Magic by Power Quest to convert your volume into FAT

Good luck

There are two ways to do this, the hard way and the $60 way.

The hard way:
you'll have to wipe the partition.
Press f8 on bootup (the way you would to get into safe mode) before the windows 2000 splash screen shows up. Then select "safe-mode command prompt only"
"or simply use a windows 98 or ME boot disk"
run fdisk, delete the partitions
Now re-install the OS and select FAT32 this time.

The $60 way
go out to the store and buy Partition Magic 6.0 for $60 bucks.
install and run it.
This program and roll back NTFS to Fat32.

Personally, I'd go with the $60 way, Partitionmagic is a good investment for anyone who works on PCs

Good luck

You can work around that server magic problem. If you have an old 95 or 98 boot disk lying around (or can make one). Boot from it (or you can try the 2000 command prompt).

Throw in the PartitionMagic CD
go to the english/dos-os2/disk2/ directory and run pqmagic.exe from there

I use this to get around installing it on my user's workstations. It should work
