Windows 2000 Defrag problem

On a hard drive when I do a properties from the Windows Explorer it shows that there is plenty of free space available. However when I try defragment it with the Windows Disk Defrag tool it shows in the upper window plenty of free space but almost the entire mapping is in red and attempting to defrag results in the report there’s no room to perform the defrag. Any suggestions?
