Windows 2000 DNs Disjoint namespace

By jeffa ·
Recently upgraded a PDC to Windows 2000. All seamed to work well until I went to upgrade a BDC. Active directory will nut run on the BDC, can not find the dc etc.

If I turn off the Upgraded DC, there is no authentication, even with 2 other BDC's on the network.

Background info:
All servers point to a unix dns box.
In NT4 the dns domain name we used was not our true domain name.
Windows 2000 DC still points to Unix DNS
It appears that DNS did not fully install on the DC

Did you configure DNS on the new 2000 DC?

I would scrap your Unix DNS system for the 2000 DNS system. There are lots of advantages to switching over. If that's not an option at least install and configure DNS on the new 2000 DC and have all your 2000 servers point to it.

Jeff, we just went through a upgrade from an NT4 domain to a windows 2000 Active Directory domain. We also have a UNIX BIND DNS server. It is possible. But there are some things you need to do to get this accomplishied. This Q&A forum will not be adequate to give you all the information. If you wish, let me know your email address and I will contact you directly to give you a very detailed view of what you will need to do to accomplish what you desire. Let me know

Michael R.

To use a BIND DNS server (non-Win2K) then you need to make several records in its DNS tables. Technet article 255913 talks about this. The article title is, "Integrating Windows 2000 DNS into an Existing BIND or Windows NT 4.0-Based DNS Namespace."The article is here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q255913
(please remove any spaces)

Basically, follow this article, make the records like it says, and you will be fine. I tested this myself (my company runs DNS on Solaris, and I had to get AD to use those DNS servers) and it works.

hope this helps
