windows 2000 logon failure

By david_grant ·
the login authentication on a win2000 laptop is not longer authenticating the password. This machine worked 2 days ago. This user is not attached to a domain and is trying to logon to the laptop as he has always done. Is there another way, other then reinstalling windows to change or fix his password to allow login in.

If he created a separate administrator account, the password can be corrected through there. (This is the reason for the default admin account in the first place.) If he is the admin account, then you're stuck with hacking the registry or reinstalling, which would be the quicker solution.

In Control Panel double-click Users and Passwords. Clear the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" check box. Click the Advanced tab and clear the "Require users to press ctrl-alt-delete before logging on" check box. This is for non-domain machines only. If what you want to do is to force a user to log on then make sure those boxes are checked.
