Locked

Windows 2000 Power Mgmt/Login Screen

By Bristar ·
I'm supporting about 75 computers that we just moved to a new domain. With all users getting a new profile (from the new domain name), they all ended up with a default power management setting which put the system into hibernation. I changed all settings to an "Always On" mode where the monitor shuts off after twenty minutes.

The problem I have is that when they move the mouse to come back in, it locked their desktop. I've tried manipulating the "Prompt for password when the computer goes off standby" switch, but this does not change the situation.

This is Windows 2000, all patches/SP's installed.

I missed something on the first round, sorry. Are they going into hibernation or standby? If they are hibernating, the credentials need to be added back in. If standby, then it shouldnt.

Neither -- it is the "Always On" profile. This turns the monitor off after 20 minutes. Everything else remains active.

Is this Windows 2003 server AD? if so the password protect on for screen saver is a default GP.

You'll have to either modify the default domain GP or create a GPO that disables this and apply it to the domaincomputers OU to over-ride the default domain GP.

Again -- no screen savers. Yes, it is Windows 2003 server AD.

Just to clarify:

* There are no screen savers involved here
* The system is not hibernating or on standby
* The system is set to power off the monitor only

None of anything above applies. Nobody had this problem until we changed to a Win2003 domain. They are not going into hibernate, standby, or screen saver. The monitor alone turns after after 20 minutes and locks their desktop. The mouse will turn it back on, but they have to re-login. We want to eliminate the desktop lock.

It will not show anything in log files and has nothing to do with NIC.
