I installed Windows 2000 Server on my machine and it will not shutdown, when I use restart or shutdown, it makes a noise as if the computer shutsdown but the harddrives and fan remain on, and the monitor goes black with a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner of the sreen. I went to Cnet and update the registry as recommended and it did not solve the problem please advise. Thanks

I tried this and it did not work on my machine. I used the restore feature and reverted back to a point when my machine shutdown. Service Pack 2 actually caused the problem.
Do the lights on the box stay on after you hit the shutdown button? Try holding the button in for about 4 seconds, some motherboards are funny that way, my win98 shuts down right away but win2k needs 4 seconds. Good luck!
In order to shut the machine down manually, I held in the power button, and it shut off. The problem began when I installed service pack 2, so I restored the machine to a point before the install. Worked fine.
