Windows 2000 Server SLOW

By tk421 ·
Windows 2000 Server, 11 2000 Pro clients, 1 NT client. Server is running very slow just in its own funcitons. For example, when I go to the Active Directory and try to Manage Users, it will take upwards of a minute to open the user manager. In the meantime, the computer is not working or struggling, simply stalling, almost as if it is frozen. This happens all the time, making administration an absolute nightmare.

Have: Dual P3 550, Raid 5 with 2 18G WD hdds, Asus mobo.

Sounds like a memory problem. Have you enough RAM? Big enough pagefile? The answer is to run performance monitor, check Processor, Process, Memory counters. If its not memory then either performance monitor or taskmanger will tell you which program is hogging the processors.

I am currently going through this myself with W2K Pro on two systems.

I corrected the first by installing a new NIC
I have not had time to del with the other. I will post again if the fix works twice.

RAID 5 with two disk drives? I think not. But I will assume you mean Raid 0 or RAID 1. Chek performance monitor and see how much paging isoccurring. You will need to add more RAM if this is the case. Also how big is your pagefile? If you have 256+ Mb of RAM I like to set my pagefile to RAM x 2. Of course you will have to monitor this with performance monitor.

Well, you are running Raid 5 with just two hard-drives!?
Also, Microsoft suggest not to run Raid 5 on the system partition.
To get more detailed information, check RAM, pagefile and run Performance Monitor.
