Windows 2000 Startup problem

By James Goerke ·
I am having a problem with a machine that startsup from a fresh install of Windows 2000 with a selections screen to either start Windows 2000, NETBOOT, or NETBOOT SafeMode. Ive check in the BIOS and turned everything off that even looked like it might cause a special boot screen. The hard drive was formatted completely before the Win2k install. Any suggestions?

NetBoot is usually associated with Mac/Apple or Linux. You say you formatted the drive but did you use existing partitions? If so the master boot record may retain some reference to NetBoot from a previous install of a different OS.

You might want to try the installation again but this time remove and recreate the partitions using fdisk or delpart before formatting.

Check your boot.ini file (c:\boot.ini). It should look something like the following to have only w2k boot up:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

Note: WINNT above is the default directory but will be different if you installed w2k to a different directory.

Make a backup of your current boot.ini and then remove any other lines from the boot.ini and try booting up again.

enjoy,

You can try the solution with "boot.ini", before this I'd run the console and use fixboot to write the mbr again.
