Windows 2000 STOP 0x7B and 0xA5 while installing on Lenovo ideapad S10e

When trying to install Windows 2000 on a Lenovo ideapad S10e i get a STOP 0x000000A5 screen. If I press F7 while loading, it will bypass this error, but will stop on STOP 0x0000007B. The whole computer is working because after it failed, to check my drive I installed win7 and it worked, which means there is no failure in the computer itself. Does anyone know what the issue might be?

I’m afraid that Microsoft at the moment doesn’t support Windows 2000, nor Lenovo still supports this laptop, that was introduced in 2009 (the glory days of Windows Vista), let alone with this OS.

You might even be the only one ever trying this combination of hardware and software.

Try googling it.

My bet is the laptop is too modern.

I ran W2000 for years and while it was nicer than the other Windows it is extremely picky about the hardware. I recall that SATA drives SHALL be set to IDE Emulation in the BIOS or you would get the 0x7B.

As time passed the need for IDE emulation passed so I doubt any new hardware does this anymore.

-> While you didn’t write why you want to do this I can report that Windows 2000 did install years ago to a Virtual Machine. I used Virtual Box on Windows 7 back then.

As mentioned above any Sata Drive needs to be set to IDE Emulation which may be the issue or you need to install a SATA Driver to allow Windows to install. I have not done thins for ages but you used to get a prompt to press a key to Install Drivers and that is the time to press the Stated Key to install the SATA Driver. Of course you’ll need to know which Chip Set the NB has to get the correct driver or maybe there is a setting in BIOS which you can change.

The other thing to look at is Windows Installer doesn’t play nicely with some RAM so you may need to reduce the amount of RAM installed in the NB to 1 Module to install this version of Windows and then you’ll very likely be hunting for Drivers to get the majority of the hardware working, you’ll probably not get it all working but at least Windows will run.

After you get Windows Installed you can refit the RAM you removed and it will run nicely but even the slightest timing issue between different RAM Modules will cause the Windows Installer to Spit the Dummy and fall over.
