Windows 2003 DC in a Windows 2000 domain

By netwrk_admn ·
I am adding a Windows 2003 server to our existing native Win 2000 domain. I know this is possible, although it doesn't look as easy as just promoting the domain.

I have researched and found that i will need to prep the 2000 servers first with the 2003 media, and after that i should be able to prep the new 2003 server.

My question is if anyone has any links to share on issues i may encounter or a step by step walk through. Thank you.

No real issues here

You need to run ADPREP on the current DC to get the schema to the correct level. Once that is done you should be able to promote the 2003 box as a DC.

The only problem you may run into is if the 2003 box is R2. If it is you will need to run the ADPREP program that is on disk 2. I believe it's in teh cmpnts\adprep directory. This one is a bit hidden and has cuased a lot of administrators grief.

There are 2 steps to the ADPREP program.
Forestprep
Domainprep

Run Forestprep first followed by Domainprep.

It sounds worse than it really is. If you cannot run the ADPREP then you will need to do a bit of repair, but this is only an issue if your current AD has problems.

Best of Luck
