Windows 2003 DNS Problem

I have set up DNS Server on windows 2003. I have 100 + Xp and few linux machines. I have added linux in DNS server.I can ping any linux machines based on host name from any windows but from any linux I can not ping windows xp machines. I have pointed to 2003 DNS in linux clients. Any help ?

When pinging from Linux did you ping the short name or the FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain name)
e.g. PC1 or

after trying PJ's and Shultzs suggestions make sure NetBIOS over TCP/IP are enabled on the XP machines. Also stick a WINS server in there will resolve the Machine to IP address problems with non-true TCP/IP [e.g. NetBIOS over TCP/IP].
