Ok here it goes …
I have made a PC with Windows 2003 Enterprise 32bit installed on it, 1 Ethernet NIC card, 1 ADSL Router DLink DSL-604T.
The main purpose is to have this server so remoter users to be able to login and retrieve files that are stored on the server.
I thought perfect this can be done via VPN, or FTP.
I have routed all incoming calls that arrive in the router to my server’s IP, plus I have added the rules for the VPN in router’s firewall.
No luck though … as the call would not even go to the Server … it appears to stop somewhere on the router.
I have tried to work with the FTP side of the server and again it would not work … I have opened the ports on the router thought…
I do not know if it makes problems that DHCP is enabled on the router and the server … would this conflict?
My next move would be to use a plain ethernet ADSL modem to connect it to the 1st NIC card on the server, this will accept all incoming calls.
And then I will connect a switch on the second NIC card to provide internet connection to my laptop I have. (mind you if I use the Ethernet modem I will not be able to use my router, therefore I suppose the only solution would be to use the switch.
Do you think the last suggestion would work? I will only use windows 2003 firewall. (until now with any other solution I tried I have it disabled, but if I use the modem I will have to enable it.)
Can someone give me basic tips regarding the configuration of the server?
