Windows 2003 perfmon port security

By Lowry Koz ·
I need to set up a Windows 2003 server to remotely do performance monitoring of prodution SQL servers. These servers are within a firewall and the new server will be outside that firewall. Will the perfmon port need to be changed from the default port? What security considerations should we take into account?

If it's thru the firewall as you say, and the interfaces on the firewall goes from high (server) to low (SQL) then no ACL is necessary. The best thing to do is monitor the firewall console or syslog and then try perfmon and see if there are any messages about denying from the firewall, assuming you have logging turned on.
