Windows 2003 Server And SQL 2000

By jonathan_almojuela ·
We have installed the SQL 2000 Server on a Windows 2003 Server for our platform update.

Unfortunately our Windows 98 workstation and Windows 95, are unable to connect with the SQL 2000 server running on a Windows 2003 Server. While Windows XP workstation and later version dont have these problems.

Obsolete may it seems but it would cost us a lot if we are to upgrade all our workstation into XP and later version of Windows OS

Our previous Server run on a NT4 platform.

Is there any patch or upgrade or service pack that would resolve my SQL Connection problem?

Thanks in advance..

What DC's are you running? W2K DCs in mixed mode need a WINS server for W9X clients so they can find services. For W2003 Server DCs you need the DSClient program to allow pre W2K machines to log on to W2003 DCs.

So if you've got all that going, next is what is the error code generated when you try to connect to the SQL data base?

I'm assuming the 95/98 machines can't even map a drive to the 2003 box, right?

Try these tips:
Make sure SMB Signing is turned off on W2003 servers or for the domain.

MAke sure the W95/98 machines have the latest MDAC 3.8 (MS Data Access Components) installed to access SQL servers.

Make sure SQL is using TCP/IP for all communcations

Make sure you have WINS running in your environment to publish NetBIOS names for older PC clients. MAke sure the 2003 server has a WINS entry in its TCPIP Properties for the LAN connection!
