Windows 2003 Server DC

By ctyrrell ·
how do I add a Windows 2003 Server Domain Controller to a Windows 2000 Infrasctructure?
I am getting errors saying that the 'forest is not prepared for installing Windows Server 2003'
Do I need to make amendments to our Windows 2000 Primary DC?

You need to first update the schema of the original 2000 server to match 2003. Bascally you run Forestprep and domain prep from the 2003 Server disk on the 2000 domain controller. Here are links to Microsofts tech documents on the subject.;en-us;278875;en-us;325379

Please take note of the special steps needed if you run Exchange 2000 on this domain. The steps needed to properly update the schema when Exchange 2000 is in use are in the second document link.

No Forestprep and Domainprep are for Exchange schema updates not Windows 2003 update.

You need to run ADPREP from Windows 2003 CD to update schema for W2003 DCs.

Hailey and PJ gave good advice, but make sure you have all hot fixes and the latest service packs in place before you upgrade.

This will solve about 90% of the post-upgrade issues before they ever occur.
