Windows 2K Licensing Service problems

By rnavarro ·
Hi Michael,

I have a Windows 2000 domain with 4 domain controllers using Active Directory. One of those is the Licensing Master server.

After installing the latest patches from Microsoft I started to get errors related to the MS licensing service on every Windows NT 4.0 server every 15 minutes. Of course they are filling my event logs out.

The patches I installed are the latest the MS03-03x

I am afraid it the problem could be related with this one in particular (Just a guess because is RPC related, same protocol that the licensing server uses)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-039.asp

The event log says:
Replication of license information failed because the License Logging Service on server \\XX1 could not be contacted.

License Service
EventI 213

I test the rpc communication, connectivity, I used RPING, I canged the License server to a different domain controller. Restarted the License service on every server. Changed the replication time and sometimes the logs stopped, but they came back after 24 hrs.

Any clue?

Thanks.

Rodrigo

In AD sites and services open the default site and right click Licensing Site Settings and choose properties. You can now choose the new Master License Server.
or
Unless there is server performing such function one can safely stop this service and set it to "Manual" or "Disabled". The service should run if one intends to monitor the use of NT licenses throughout the organization, but in this case a license server has to be configured.

The problem is that we wnt to monitor the licenses, then we can not stop the service. Also, as we have 4 domain controllers, I changed the Licensing Server to another DC (as indicated in your answer)but after 24 hrs, the warnings are back again filling all the event logs again.

At this point my guess is more oriented to a RPC problem, caused by the security patch I installed.

Microsoft says this is normally the result of a communications problem on your network. The License Logging Service must be able to establish a RPC connection with the License Master server.
If you can't find the problem, here is what Microsoft recommends in Q198132, when this happens on your Windows NT or Windows 2000 network:
"To work around this issue and prevent the error messages from being written to Event Viewer, you can stop the LLS. To do this click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Services. Double-click License Logging Service, click Disabled, click OK, and then click Close. "
