Windows 2K setup report corrupt C drive

    Locked

    by sselder ·

I have succesfully installed Win2K(PRO) on several HDs with no problem. The drives were all under 10GB. I recently installed a 30GB Western Digital but when I copied the partition the Win2K hangs permanently. I’ve tried “clean install” a dozen timeswith the following partitions; 30GB, 10.10.10GB, 2.8.10.10GB,2.2.2.4.10.10GB, Each time I’ve ran a scandisk (thorough) and Win 98 reports good to go. When I install the Win 2K it always hangs at the file system check an report the C: drive is corrupt, setup can not continue!

Try formatting the hard drive through Fdisk, and enable the large hard disk support, then reformat the drive after you have set the partition size that you prefer. If you use the disk that came with the hard drive it will set up the partition sizes that would support the file system you want to use.

This may take a little time, but will resolve your problem. First, physically disconnect all the drives, except for the 30 GB. Boot the machine with the Win98 startup disk, run fdisk and select 4 (display partitions), my guess is that you might hava a bad partition there. If it won’t hurt any, delete all partitions, exit to prompt, run fdisk /mbr and reboot with the diskette again. Go back into fdisk and create a single partition with 30 GB in size. Exit to prompt. Now, turn off your machine, mount all the disks, turn machine on, go into Bios, under Boot sequence, select CD first, insert Win2K CD into drive and boot from CD.
      You should be OK.

      Good luck!

Thanks, tried this. I’m starting to think the drive is bad….but it loads Win NT/98 and Linux perfectly. I have tried different Media…

I had trouble like this with Win98 and WinNT4 and a 13.6 GB Western Digital drive. I had to use WD’s Data LifeGurad Tools (available on their web site) to write zeros to the drive before reformatting and partitioning it. WD’s tech support claimed this was due to stuff being left on the drive from Quality testing.

i suggest to run fdisk /mbr too and to do a harddisc check with a utility other than scandisk (ie ndd)

Thanks, tried it. No errors were detected, but still same errors on install. I have loaded NT/98/Linux on this drive without any errors…I have tried different Media. Still no avail…
