Windows 3.1 Pentium won't upgrade to 95

By jgeist ·
I'm trying to upgrade a Canon Innova 500 computer (Pentium 90) from Win 3.11 to 95. If I use a regular Win95 cd, it starts the install and before it gets very far I get an error message saying that "there's already an operating system installed that cannot be upgraded by the current cd. Please use an upgrade." When I use the Win95 upgrade contained on a cd I have with other OS's, File Manager will not display any of the files in any of the Windows directories. The only thing that will display is the DOS 6.22 directory. Using File, Run and typing the path to Setup gives me an error message that the file cannot be found. Not even exiting to DOS will let me read the Win95 directories. DOS says the directory is invalid when I try to do a "dir" on any of the directories other than DOS 6.22. This is the weirdest thing I've ever seen. I did find a KB article on Microsoft's site referencing the error message I got, but it related to upgrading from 95 to 98 and not 3.11 to 95. Any thoughts on what's happ

The Win95 upgrade is probaly what the system cannnot read by doing an upgrade with the version you are using, which I suspect the bios needs to be updated. If nothing else go ahead and do a fresh install from Fdisk. The article could apply to what you are expierenceing only it is referencing another operating system.

Try renaming WIN.COM to WIN.OLD, then try to install using the first cd. (Change the name back if it still doesn't work).

Windows 3.1 Pentium won't upgrade to 95

Your original 95 CD is actually a full install (probably an OEM release). The full installs hate having a previous OS (such as Windows 3.11) installed. If you really want to use that CD, you will need to delete the Windows directory and install fresh with 95.

If you have an upgrade CD, it should work. But, you will want to run the install from within Windows 3.11 in order to maintain your settings.

Truth be told, I would probably say you should format and resintall from scratch after making a backup, but that is my personal preference.

Do not enter the Win3.11.
Start setup in DOS using SETUPM command in your Win95 CD. If the problem persists, you have an OEM version of Win95, i. e. you cannot upgrade some previous Windows version. Then you must first remove Win3.11 directory, forexample with "deltree windows" typed on the command prompt.

Unfortunately, DOS would not recognize any of the Windows directories on the OS cd as valid.
