windows 7 computers can not see computers/servers on domain

    Locked

    by luv2bike2 ·

i have a windows 7 computer that is on the domain and I can only see the only other windows 7 computer and an HP printer when i check out Network. I do not see the domain. My computer is in the domain, I even took it out of the domain and put it into a workgroup/restarted computer and put it back into the domain/restarted computer and still I only see the 2 windows 7 computers and an HP printer. The other windows 7 computer is only seeing the 2 windows 7 computers and the HP printer. both computers are up-to-date on MS updates.

I do an Ipconfig and default gateway, subnet mask, dns and ip address is all correct.

both windows 7 computers can map drives to the servers as long as i put in the path to the location that i want/need to map to. i can not browse to them in map a drive.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    R

Is this a mixed operating system domain?

For instance, multiple versions of Windows such as XP, Vista, 7? If so, then check in your networking and see if a “homegroup” has been added in the Windows 7 machines. If it has, you may need to remove the homegroup, then add the domain server as the preferred group, check the type of group/server as well so that they match (if Windows XP workgroup, set it as such, etc.)

We have 17 Windows XP and 2 Windows 7 computers. I checked and there is no “homegroup” on the Windows 7 computers. Active networks says Domain network and our domain name.
        any other suggestions?
again thank you for your suggestion. 🙂

        In reply to subnet

subnet is 255.255.255.0 like all the other computers. I will try changing it to 255.255.0.0 and see what happens. I will post back. thank you for your suggestion. 🙂

        In reply to subnet

I believe the issue is solved.

I changed the subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 , reboot and all the computers and servers showed up under Network.

I did a couple of other things like

put it on DCHP and kept the DNS for the local server rebooted and everything was still showing up,

took DNS settings out and Netbios over TCP/IP rebooted and everything was still showing up.

at one point all the computers and servers were gone after everything was working fine so i reboot the computer and all computers and servers are back.

I don’t understand what happened or why, at least they are back.
Thanks for your suggestion again. 🙂

I resolved this exact same problem by….

Shutting down every network connected device (on Windows Workgroup). Waiting a few minutes and then starting them all up again. I also had to do this for other reasons, such as a particular Windows workgroup device could not be seen. You may also want to disable your firewall application just to see if that is not causing you problems.
In Windows 7, you can set your network sharing advanced settings to use 40 bit encryption instead of 128 bit (default). Control Panel/network and sharing centre/advanced sharing settings. Ensure all your devices are set to the same Workgroup name (including your windows 7 devices). This is shown in control panel/system – “computer name domain and workgroup settings section”
