Windows 7 or Ubuntu 10.10?

Hi everyone,

New to TechRepublic and I'm going to build a new computer. My computer crashed about 2 years ago and I have been using my Fiancee's HP since. It's gonna be a desktop and the question is should I go Windows 7 or Ubuntu 10.10.

I'm going for a degree in IT with a concentration toward Software Engineering but for the most its just gonna be for everyday use and I haven't made up my mind on the route I should/want to take... Any ideas?

What are you more comfortable with

And what exactly do you want to do?

Each OS has it's advantages and disadvantages so ideally you should chose one which suits your personal needs better than the other.

But just a personal observation here if you go with 7 I would only chose the 64 Bit Version of 7 as the 32 Bit Version is way too restricted in what hardware it works with. It's also limited to 4 GIG of RAM which the 64 Bit Version isn't.
