Windows 95 doesn't Normal boot...caught

By kgow ·
Working on a HP Vectra VLi8 that has worked in the past but will not boot now. No new software added within last month and no usual devices attached.

It gets past the splash screen to the 'Starting Windows 95...' and then hangs for about 30 seconds then reboots. The PC will boot into Safe Mode and I tried disabling Network and Display drivers.

Interestingly the most recent bootlog shows failures to load fonts. Is this the possible cause? Corrupt System.ini? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

If its a computer that is not used too often and can afford to have windows reinstalled i would just do that. Save yourself the headache of going through this and just reinstall.. It may take an hour to do but its better than struggling to edit system.ini files and win.ini files, registry and other lengthy projects. (If your not sure of what to do that is)
That's the easiest answer you'll find. Some people may show you the hard way.. It's your choice.. :)

a corrupt fonts folder may be the cause. I have never seen that reboot a machine though. Get tweak UI from microsoft and get the machine into safe mode and use tweak UI and have it repair the fonts folder. If that doesn't fix it if you are technically inclined you can remove all the pc cards in the system except for video and disconnect all your disk drives except the hard drive. if that fixes it add the devices back in 1 by 1 till you find the offending device

I would do a reinstall on windows, is the easiest way. Messing arround with these things is just time consuming. Good luck and let me know what you did to fix it :)

Try booting from the windows 95 recovery disk, and running scandisk. You may as well defrag the hard disk while you are at it.

No idea if this will fix the problem, but it will only take 10 minutes or so.

Try installing new RAM. If one of your RAM chips is corrupt then Windows sometimes does this loop. This has happened to me before and installing different RAM helped me. GL
