Windows 95 not remembering preferences

By msl0001 ·
I have a P166 IBM ThinkPad 560E. After a crash due to a faulty or damaged CDRW, Windows 95 now shows the Welcome to Windows screen each time I reboot, no matter how many times I uncheck the box to "Show screen at startup". I also lost the preference for small icons in the taskbar. I tried deleting the .pwl file, but that hasn't worked either. Any ideas how I can restore my computer to be able to save preferences? When the crashes occured, I was trying to copy a file to the CDRW, and I got the blue screen many times either with fatal errors or General protection errors. The computer never was forced to go to safe mode.

Have you tried reinstalling Win 95 ontop of itself. Thus keeping your perferences, but correcting damaged files. The reinstall may also reinstall CDRW correctly. Also try uninstalling devices and reinstalling.

I know you are probably trying to avoid it, but a clean install of Win 95 with a restore of your current drive will always work.

I reinstalled windows, and it seems to have helped with the problem, however it caused a whole raft of other problems that I had to fix. I had to re-download and reinstall IE 5.5. Then uninstall it and reinstall it again since it would not run any Javascript. Uninstalling/reinstalling did not work, so I also had to reinstall MS Virtual Machine to fix the problem...Ultimately my problem was fixed, but it took about a week and a half to get everything working ok again. There was not a problem with the CDRW being installed incorrectly. A bad CDRW disk caused the initial crash that started this problem, but it never caused the drive to stop working.

Since I use this laptop for work and have software installed for access to a VPN, (which I do not have available to me on CD or Diskette), I was hesitant to try to reinstall win 95 for fear of disabling my connection to the VPN.

I suppose there's probobly a couple of way to tackle this. I would go into c:\windows\profiles and rename the folder in there that corisponds with your login and rename it and then log back in and let windows recreate the profile directory.

You also may want to find a copy of poledit (usually on the win95 CD, and look at the local user and make sure you're looking at standard values for locations of things 9like c:\windows\desktop for the desktop) and possably clear and reset those. After that, I'd be looking at run regclean once on it and then reinstalling IE to reset the webcheck function.

Good luck to you

Mark
